The 4th of July is Not a Military Holiday. But…

When I decided to participate and use social media platforms I told myself I would, as best that I could, avoid engaging in the social, political or religious commentary that seems to feed a very toxic atmosphere today. This atmosphere has become a regular and seemingly accepted part of our culture today, and in my opinion it has negatively tarnished our society. I try to maintain objectivity, keep emotions at bay, and not degrade or insult anyone (remember the Golden Rule?). I don’t rant (often). Those who know me have a good idea on where I fall regarding my social, political and religious views and beliefs.

I love America. I love being an American. I am amazed at how our Republic has held together and survived. I understand why people from other countries have wanted to come to America for the past 243 years, many gave their lives in trying to get here.

I understand the controversy today, especially today, with regard to the 4th of July not being a military holiday. Technically it is not. It is the celebration of America’s freedom. Specifically, we are celebrating the 1776 signing of the Declaration of Independence. It is mindful to note that the independence achieved and still holding today would not exist without the successful past efforts and current presence of America’s military forces.

We can proudly and accurately say that we are the “home of the free because of the brave”. The brave is not defined solely as the members of our military, but by the men and women who throughout history and still today stand behind (and defend) America’s Declaration of Independence.

I hope you had a Happy Independence Day my friends.
